Initial Difficulties
Foreign Domestic workers (FDWs) may come from the rural areas of their home countries. They may never have lived or worked in a city. Hence they may have difficulty understanding and communicating in your language.
Some common difficulties new FDWs face include:
  • The use of modern household appliances such as washing machines and microwave ovens;
  • Adjustment to living in high-rise buildings; and
  • Different practices in taking care of children.
New FDWs will need a period of orientation and adaptation to familiarize themselves with household habits and way of life. As the employer, you can help by taking time to orientate and train your new FDW in her job, especially in the first few months of her employment.
